Operating under the Georgia Revenue Codes, the Board of Tax Assessors is responsible for the appraisal
and assessment of all Residential, Commercial, and Personal Property in DeKalb County. Property
is appraised at 100% of its fair market value and assessed at 40% of that value.
The Board of Tax Assessors is a five member body of appointed citizens
of DeKalb County, serving on a part time basis, who meet every other Thursday at 9:30 a.m.
unless otherwise posted. They are appointed for staggered terms of four, five, or six years
by the DeKalb County Board of Commissioners and operate autonomously. A Chairman, Vice Chairman,
and Secretary are elected on an annual basis. The Board of Tax Assessors hires a Chief Appraiser
to administer the functions of the Property Appraisal Department.
Office hours are 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Monday through Friday. The office is closed on legal holidays.
All public information is available for review, and copies may be obtained for a nominal fee.
We are located in the Callaway Building at 120 W. Trinity Place, Decatur, Georgia 30030.
Real Estate Property Tax Returns are received in this office from January 1 st
to April 1 st. You may file a Real Estate Property Tax Return if you would like to
declare a value on your property. All returns must be POSTMARKED by the U.S.
Postal Service no later than April 1 st.
If you feel your appraised value is incorrect you may file an appeal when you receive your

Personal Property Tax Returns
are received in this office from January 1 st
to April 1 st. You are responsible for reporting all taxable personal property.
Failure to do so will result in penalties being assessed against you. If you own a business,
airplane, or boat and/or motor you must file a return. a courtesy, return forms are mailed.
However, failure to receive the forms from us by mail does not relieve you of the responsibility
of filing the return. Forms are available for download within this site or can be requested by
calling the Personal Property Division at 404-371-2479.
Annual Assessment Notices will be mailed to all taxable real estate property owners in May of each year,
starting in 2011. You will have 45 days from the date shown on the Notice to appeal if you do not agree with
the Current Value shown on the Notice. Please CLICK HERE
