The Criminal Investigation Division is comprised of four (4) sections.  The Division is responsible for the investigation of all homicides, assaults, kidnappings, commercial robberies, domestic violence incidents, drug enforcement, gangs, auto thefts and sexual assaults.  The Criminal Investigation Division welcomes the public's assistance in reporting crimes and providing information about investigations.  The following numbers are provided for your use and convenience.

Homicide/Assault Unit

The Homicide/Assault Unit is tasked with the investigation of all homicides, other deaths and any type of personal assault.  Homicides consist of murder, voluntary manslaughter and involuntary manslaughter.  Other deaths are suicides, accidental and natural.  Assaults consist of any felonious or misdemeanor assault, threat of violence, kidnapping and any other type of personal assault.  This unit also investigates officer involved weapon discharges.

Crime Scene Unit

The Crime Scene Investigation Unit is responsible for complex crime scene investigations; responsibility for the evaluation of the scene; uses various types of equipment; develops, secures, and packages physical evidence for scientific evaluation and comparison; prepares detailed reports on the observations and activities at the scene for the law enforcement agency responsible for the investigation of the crime; and testifies in court regarding the findings and processing methods used at the scene.  The Crime Scene Investigation Unit is also responsible for marijuana laboratory analysis, latent print examinations and forensic photographs.

The Commercial Robbery Unit strives to make DeKalb County the safest place to establish, own and operate a commercial enterprise in Metro Atlanta.  The unit also investigates any home invasion and business delivery robbery.  This goal will be accomplished by conducting the highest caliber of investigation possible into all commercial and residential robberies in Unincorporated DeKalb County.

Special Victims Unit

The Special Victims Unit is responsible for investigating a wide range of criminal cases.  The unit handles missing persons (children and adults), harassing phone calls and sexual related crimes ranging from child molestation to rapes of adults and juveniles.  The unit also handles child deaths that are connected to abuse.

Domestic Violence Unit

The Domestic Violence Unit is responsible for the investigation of all domestic related assaults to include simple battery, battery, simple assault, aggravated battery, aggravated assault and terroristic threats.  The unit is also tasked with elder abuse cases to include the physical abuse and neglect of the elderly and the investigation of unlicensed personal care facilities.

Internet Crimes Against Children Unit (ICAC)

The ICAC unit is responsible for the investigations of sexual crimes against children that has an internet nexus.  The unit is further tasked with investigating the commercial sexual exploitation of children (CSEC).  The ICAC unit also provides computer and cellular phone forensics for the entire Criminal Investigation Division.

Narcotics Unit

The Narcotics Unit is responsible for the enforcement of applicable laws pertaining to narcotics and dangerous drugs, the latent investigations of organized crime groups and criminal enterprises engaged in narcotics trafficking.  The unit also gathers and disseminates pertinent information concerning narcotics to divisions within the DeKalb Police Department and other agencies.

The Narcotics Unit directs enforcement efforts toward criminal drug organizations within DeKalb County.  Additionally, members from the Narcotics Unit work with various agencies including the DEA, GBI and US Marshal's Office

Vice Unit

The Vice Unit is responsible for the investigation of adult establishments, illegal gambling, prostitution, pornography, regulation of alcoholic beverage laws and escort services.

Gang Unit

The Gang Unit is tasked with collecting intelligence through street enforcement on all gang activity, enforcing Georgia anti-gang laws, the investigation of all gang related crimes and conducting collaborative investigations with other units within the police department.

Fusion Unit

The Fusion Unit is an information sharing center.

Intelligence Unit

The Intelligence Unit collects, processes and analyzes information to produce actionable intelligence.

Auto Theft Unit

The responsibility of the Auto Theft Unit is to conduct follow-up investigation on cases associated with vehicle thefts, motor cycle thefts, unauthorized use of motor vehicles, stolen vehicle parts, chop shops, thefts of boats, trailers, heavy equipment and cargo thefts.  In addition, the unit investigates thefts with car dealerships, rental car agencies, title fraud violations associated with salvage yards and any other entities associated with vehicles and their commerce.
